How We Edit Pre-Wedding Photos: Behind-The-Scenes Process?

At Somlim Photography, a pre-wedding shoot doesn't end when we pack up the camera. The shoot is just the beginning. What happens next, back at the editing desk, is where your photos go from raw captures to the finished images you'll keep forever.
Here's exactly how we do it.
Step 1: File Backup and Import
The moment we return from a shoot, the first thing we do is back up every single RAW file to two separate hard drives. RAW files hold far more image data than JPEGs, which gives us the flexibility to make significant adjustments to exposure, color, and detail without degrading image quality. We don't start editing until we know the files are safe in two locations.
We organize everything into a structured folder system before opening any editing software, labeling folders by couple name and shoot date. This sounds basic, but it matters. Trying to edit from a disorganized folder structure wastes time and increases the chance of missing images during delivery.
Step 2: Culling (Selecting the Best Frames)
A typical Best Prewedding Photography in Bhubaneswar session at Somlim Photography produces anywhere from 300 to 600 raw captures. You won't receive all of them, and you wouldn't want to. Culling means sorting through all the images to select the best ones for editing.
We cull using Lightroom's Library module, flagging keepers with "P" and rejecting weak frames with "X." We avoid switching into the Develop module during this phase, since rendering high-resolution previews slows the entire process down.
What gets rejected? Duplicate frames, photos with closed eyes, shots where the focus missed, and anything where the lighting or composition didn't work. What survives are the frames that tell your story cleanly.
For a standard pre-wedding session, we typically deliver 60 to 100 edited images, depending on the number of locations, outfit changes, and hours of coverage.
Step 3: Color Correction and Global Adjustments
Adobe Lightroom is the go-to tool for editing pre-wedding photos. Its smart preview system lets photographers work on compressed file versions, making the process faster without sacrificing quality.
Once the selects are confirmed, we apply a base preset that matches our signature style. From there, we adjust each image individually for:
Exposure: Brightening or pulling back the overall light level.
White Balance: Getting skin tones accurate. Outdoor shoots in Odisha often involve a mix of warm afternoon sun and cool shade, so this step needs attention image by image.
Contrast and Highlights: Recovering blown-out sky or lifting shadow detail in darker scenes.
Color Grading: This is where the mood gets set. If the couple wants a moody atmosphere, we make colors more muted. For a vibrant, warm feel, we push saturation in the reds and oranges.
For 90% of Best Prewedding Photographers, Adobe Lightroom Classic is the central editing hub. Some photographers prefer Capture One for its superior color science and granular color control, though it has a steeper learning curve. At Somlim Photography, we primarily work in Lightroom with Photoshop for detailed retouching.
Step 4: Skin Retouching and Detail Work
Not every image goes into Photoshop. Only the hero shots, the ones you'll likely want printed or shared, receive full retouching.
In Photoshop, we make skin look flawless, remove stray hairs, smooth out clothing creases, remove glares, and clean up distracting background elements.
We keep retouching realistic. The goal isn't to replace your face with someone else's. It's to remove temporary distractions, a mark from a watch strap, dust on clothing, a photobomber in the distance, while keeping the image looking like you.
The goal is not to alter reality but to enhance the natural beauty of the moment captured. That principle drives every decision we make in this stage.
Step 5: Consistency Check and Final Review
Before we export a single image, we do a full gallery pass. We look at all the selected photos together to make sure the color toning, brightness, and style are consistent from the first frame to the last.
This step catches small inconsistencies that are easy to miss when you're focused on individual images. One photo that looks noticeably cooler or warmer than the rest will break the visual continuity of your gallery.
A typical solo photographer can spend anywhere from 20 to 60 hours on post-processing. Without a structured workflow, that number climbs higher and quality drops. Our process is designed to keep both time and quality in check.
Step 6: Export and Delivery
We export your images in high resolution, suitable for large prints, and in a web-optimized version for sharing on social media or WhatsApp. You receive both.
A solid workflow ends with importing RAW files, culling down to the best selections, applying presets, adjusting exposure, and finishing with portrait retouching. That's exactly what we follow, every session, without exception.
We deliver pre-wedding galleries within 10 to 15 working days after the shoot date.
A Few Ideas for Your Pre-Wedding Session
If you're planning your Best Prewedding Photography in Bhubaneswar shoot with us, here are concepts that photograph well in and around Bhubaneswar and Odisha:
Konark Sun Temple at golden hour: The stone architecture and warm light create natural depth without needing heavy editing.
Chilika Lake at sunrise: Reflections on water are highly versatile in post-processing and give you both moody and bright editing options.
Odisha's mustard fields in winter (November-January): Yellow tones respond beautifully to color grading.
Rustic haveli or heritage architecture in old Bhubaneswar: Adds texture and contrast that makes edited portraits pop.
Rainy season shoots: Wet surfaces and overcast skies give you a naturally soft, diffused look that requires minimal post-production.
